Heat Tracking (Dam)
This tab lets you record and manage heat (estrus) start dates for a dam (female).
The system uses these dates to:
- show history
- estimate cycle length
- (when relevant) show a short planning timeline based on the most recent heat
Heat tracking is available only when the litter has a valid dam_dog_id.
If the litter has no dam assigned, this tab will show a message that heat tracking is unavailable.
- Heat records are shared across all litters that use the same dam (you’ll see the same history anywhere that dam is used).
- Heat records are visible only to the user who recorded them.
Main actions
➕ Add a heat start date
- Open the Heat start date field.
- Select the date when the heat started.
- Click Add Heat.
- A confirmation message appears and the list refreshes automatically.
🗑️ Delete a recorded heat
- In Recorded heats, locate the heat you want to remove.
- Click Delete next to that entry.
- The row animates out, then the system removes it and refreshes the list.
Validation and messages
⛔ Future dates are not allowed
The heat start date cannot be in the future. If you select a future date, the system shows an error message.
🧾 Duplicate dates are prevented
If you try to add a date that already exists for that dam, the system prevents duplicates and shows an informational message.
⏳ Loading and empty states
- Loading heats… appears while the list is being fetched.
- No heats yet. appears when there are no heat records for that dam (for the current user).
Insights and helpful features
📏 Estimated cycle length
When you have recorded at least 2 heat start dates, the system estimates the cycle length in days. With 3+ dates, the estimate is typically more reliable.
If you have fewer than 2 entries, the tab will show a tip encouraging you to add older heats so the estimate can be calculated.
🗓️ Active heat planning (appears only when relevant)
When the most recent recorded heat started recently, the tab may display an Active heat planning panel.
This is a planning aid that shows approximate milestone dates based on the recorded start date.
- It appears only when the most recent heat is within approximately 0–28 days from today.
- It shows suggested timing for progesterone testing and a typical fertile window range.
- Veterinary guidance and progesterone results should drive final decisions.
This feature is a guideline only. Always follow your veterinarian’s advice and progesterone test results.
Best practices
- Record heats consistently using the actual start date.
- Add older heat dates when available to improve cycle-length estimation.
- Use the planning panel as a guideline only; confirm decisions with progesterone testing and veterinary advice.
Troubleshooting
❓ I can’t see heat data
- Confirm the litter has a valid
dam_dog_id. - Heat records are private to the user who created them. If another user recorded heats, you will not see them.
